2025 Academic Symposium on the Development of Social Housing in an Aging Society Organized by the Architecture and Building Research Institute, Ministry of the Interior

  • Date:2025-09-22

Taiwan’s social housing policy began relatively late. Compared with Europe, the United States, and other Asian countries, the stock of social housing remains limited. At present, both central and local governments are focusing primarily on “meeting the quantitative demand” for social housing. However, as social housing policy and related undertakings are long-term and continuous, the issue of “improving quality” must also be evaluated and reviewed in a timely manner.

In particular, the number of social housing units in Taiwan has already exceeded 120,000. Yet the planning of open community areas, public service spaces, and green recreational spaces has often been oriented toward young households. Whether these environments can be made friendlier and more inclusive for older adults is becoming an essential consideration in social housing planning and design, as well as a key factor in fostering deeper interaction with surrounding neighborhoods. A well-developed public service space in social housing can help realize the goals of the Presidential Office’s “Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee,” particularly the focus on “health promotion and chronic disease prevention,” thereby enhancing the quality of life and physical well-being of older adults.

This symposium will explore social housing–related issues from the perspectives of active aging and symbiotic living environments. It will focus on community space quality that is friendlier and more universal for older adults, through theoretical discussion, practical approaches, and real-world case studies. The goal is to provide references for the planning of new social housing units and the improvement of existing ones.

We welcome participation from academic institutions and researchers working on aging and built environments, professionals from architectural firms engaged in social housing design and planning, as well as scholars and practitioners interested in aging-friendly living environments and the future development of social housing.
