Taiwan has entered a super-aged society. In response to the challenges posed by declining birth rates and population aging, increasing attention has been given to the use of technology-based products and services to improve the quality of life of older adults while reducing the burden on caregivers. To promote the adoption of such products and services in residential settings for older adults and advance the concept of “aging in place,” the Architecture and Building Research Institute (ABRI), Ministry of the Interior, participated in the 3rd Healthy Ageing Tech Show from August 7 to 9, 2026, with an exhibition themed “Smart Safeguarding, Joyful Co-Living.” The event was held under the guidance of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), and Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP), and was organized by the Institute for Biotechnology and Medicine Industry (IBMI) and the Research Center for Biotechnology and Medicine Policy (RBMP).
At its booth, ABRI showcased the achievements of its technology project, “Development of a Field Validation Mechanism for Smart Residential Technology Products and Services for Older Adults,” implemented from 2024 to 2026. The project provides a three-stage support mechanism comprising Value Proposition Capacity Building, Product Positioning and Suitability Assessment, and Residential Field Validation for Older Adults. Three products and services participating in this year’s program were selected for on-site demonstration. Through visual design and spatial arrangements simulating residential settings for older adults, visitors were able to experience how the showcased products and services could be integrated into an enjoyable co-living environment while delivering benefits such as greater comfort and safety, health empowerment, and reduced demand for home-based long-term care.
ABRI’s booth was designed around the daily-life scenario of an older couple living together and caring for one another. The simulated residential setting included an entrance area, living room, and bedroom, and featured three products: the Smart Building Environmental Monitoring System, the Home Rehabilitation Exercise Platform, and the AI-Powered Excretion Care System.
The Smart Building Environmental Monitoring System provides comprehensive residential support ranging from sound, lighting, and air-quality control to fall detection, robotic meal delivery, and around-the-clock household safety management, creating a comfortable and secure home environment for older adults.
The Home Rehabilitation Exercise Platform combines a set-top-box application with motion detection technology, with all motion analysis performed locally on the set-top box. It is also connected to therapist-led training, progress tracking, and scheduling services, enabling older adults to conveniently carry out rehabilitation exercises at home simply by using their television.
The AI-Powered Excretion Care System uses artificial intelligence to detect and analyze urination and bowel movements among individuals who are bedridden for extended periods. When necessary, the system automatically activates cleaning, drying, and skin-safe sanitization functions. This helps prevent the discomfort associated with prolonged diaper use as well as problems such as diaper rash. At the same time, caregivers no longer need to change diapers at high frequency or repeatedly check for urination and bowel movements manually, thereby reducing both the physical workload and psychological stress associated with caregiving.
On the opening day, Director-General Rong-Jin Wang of ABRI and Director Pei-Ling Liu of the Center of Innovation and Synergy for Intelligent Home and Living Technology (iNSIGHT), National Taiwan University (NTU), the project implementation team, visited the Institute’s exhibition booth to learn about the key highlights of the exhibition.
Meanwhile, Executive Director Chuin-Shan Chen of the NTU iNSIGHT Center participated in an event held at the special exhibition area of the Industrial Development Administration (IDA), MOEA, the coordinating agency for the overarching program under which ABRI’s technology project, “Development of a Field Validation Mechanism for Smart Residential Technology Products and Services for Older Adults,” is implemented. During the event, he presented the project’s achievements and key highlights.
Visitors who consulted with ABRI at the exhibition included teachers, students, and professionals in the fields of age-friendly environments and long-term care, as well as older adults and their family members. The on-site hands-on experience offered by the Home Rehabilitation Exercise Platform was particularly well received by many older visitors. The overall planning and presentation of ABRI’s booth received strong recognition and highly positive feedback from exhibition attendees.
