Research on Green Roofs Construction Technology (2/2)

Abstract
1. Purpose of the research
In urban areas, condense buildings and impervious surfaces replace
majority of green space. Hence, interaction between buildings and
environment are limited because of green space reduction and conflicts
arise between them such as urban heat island effect, urban flood, etc.
Because of traditional storm water management strategy, rooftop of
building lacks the ability of water conservation. For considering the
healthy urban development, both healthy water cycle concept and
good interaction between building and environment are needed to be
considered. For these reasons, green roof will therefore be considered
in foreign countries. But research for green roof in domestic is limited.
2. Research methodologies and procedures
(1) Collect relative products (including light weight material),
examples and types of greenroof for domestic and abroad;
(2) Classify the product, layout, application and construction layout
based on the results of the first year’ results;
(3) Construct the vegetation guideline for greenroof;
(4) Establish the methodology for assessing the benefits of urban
flood control and water retention;
(5) Develop the technology for combining the rainwater harvesting
technique and greenoof;
(6) Recommend the construction technology of greenroof in
domestic suitable for subtropical climate condition.
2. Major findings
(1) Classification of relatives products for green roof in water
proofing, root proofing, buffer zone, drainage, medium filter, etc.
layers;
(2) Finding existed problems for green roof from 16 domestic green
roof cases and comparing with foreign results;
(3) Proposed vegetations for garden green roof, assembled green
roof, and vegetated thin green roof types;
(4) Evaluate the benefits of urban flood mitigation and ability of
water conservation for selected combination of green roofs by

physical experiment;
(5) Set up the methodology for calculating the storage capacity of
rooftop rainwater harvesting system combining with green roof
installation;
(6) Recommend construction methodologies for green roof in
subtropical climate areas and operation and maintenance items
for green roofs.
3. Major recommendation items
(1) For short tern
 Set up more demonstrated sites for different types of green
roofs;
 Green roof for V-shape roof top buildings should be further
studied;
 Rainwater harvesting system combined with green roof for
different plantation, medium, and climate conditions, etc.
should be further studied.
(2) For long term
 More education and training courses for green roofs should be
introduced;
 Set up green roof technology service group for helping people
or units who want to set up green roof;
 Propose some regulations and subsidence standard for
installing green roof.
