Abstract
1. Origin of the study
Due to the improvement of living standard and the convenience of transportation in
Taiwan, petition cases on noise problems due to the urbanization phenomena like intense
population and traffic jam are increasing year by year, where, most of the cases relate to
life noise and floor impact sound in residential complexes, which impact the normal work
and rest of the people, therefore, the demand for improved residential sound environment
quality and healthful living conditions become more and more eager. According to the
results of the research of the Architecture and Building Research Institute, Ministry of the
Interior, on acoustic standards and regulations of buildings as well as relevant
amendments, in existing building technique specifications of Taiwan, sound insulation
adopts the standards of partition materials and thickness, which cannot be sued to evaluate
whether the proper sound insulation effect is achieved. According to the demand for the
amendment of domestic building sound insulation regulations, the Architecture and
Building Research Institute, Ministry of the Interior and the Bureau of Standards
Metrology and Inspection, Ministry of Economic Affairs have jointly completed and
promulgate successively relevant CNS Acoustic standards of building as basis for future
amendment of building sound insulation regulations.
In 1st year this study has carried out field survey on the sound environment of
various residential buildings in Taiwan and proposed suggestions for the improvement of
residential sound environment. In the 2nd year the study focused on establishment of the
diagnosis and management mechanism and design guideline for sound environment of
dwelling houses to promote the quality of living environment.

2. Methods and procedure of the study
This study mainly probes into the current situation and diagnosis of residential sound
environment, documentary analysis, questionnaire survey research, measurement and
quantitative analysis method, statistical analysis and expert consulting method are
adopted for the survey and analysis on the residential sound environment. In this study,
representative residential building cases have been selected for field survey according to
the urban development conditions in different areas of Taiwan as well as locations,
external environmental conditions, types of sound sources and building types, etc. and the
goal is to propose suggestions for improvement according to the results of the field
measurement on residential sound environment according to the standard procedure of
field measurement.
3. Important findings
The field measurement on the acoustic performance of the residential sound
environment have been completed in this study according to the Standard Operation
Procedures (S.O.P)for field survey and measurement of residential sound environment,
and the following important findings are obtained:
(1) The management about construction regulations should be requested on sound
insulation performance of building, and promotes quality of sound environment of
dwelling-houses. Furthermore the dwelling-houses will be designed by the guideline
of sound insulation design.
(2) According to the results of the field measurement of this study, the sound insulation
performances of the facades were poor and the floor impact sound performance of
residential floors with tile covering were also poor. This study provided propose
suggestions that were about insulation performance of windows and floors, to
provide insulation sound design or improve sound environment.
(3) This study analyzed of questionnaires and environment noise and compared with
sound insulation performance standard of various countries. Then addressed the

suggestion sound insulation performance standard of wall and floor.
(4) This study established the guideline of sound insulation design for architectural,
interior designer in the building planning and renovation of the maintenance of the
guidelines.
4. Suggestions
For immediate strategies: Continued to investigate sound environment of
architectural types in Taiwan and accumulate the data bases. Furthermore the
dwelling-houses will be designed by the guideline of sound insulation design.

Explanation: The field measurement methods have been established and
measurement on actual cases have been carried out in this stage of study, it is
suggested to apply existing measurement standards to other cases in follow-up
researches to accumulate more complete data for the acoustic performance of
buildings.
For long-term strategies: Suggested to add the sound insulation performance
standard and that practiced the quality management of dwelling sound environment.

Explanation: The construction technology regulation only requested structure
material and thickness that were not to ensure the minimum requirements of the
sound insulation performance, and recommended legalization of building sound
insulation standards.
